The following strategies are offered for enhancing attention and managing attention problems. This listing is by no means exhaustive, but rather is meant as a place to begin. The best resources for strategies are the creative, inventive minds of enlightened assessment professionals, teachers and parents, in partnership with the students they serve. Together they can create multiple alternative strategies.

1. Take the Mystery Away

The first and perhaps most important management strategy is to insure that all students understand how attention works and identify their particular profiles of attention strengths and weaknesses. Then, students should be taught attention management strategies.

2. Understand Consistent Inconsistency

Teachers and parents should understand that the inconsistency of children with attention problems is not evidence of a poor attitude or lack of motivation. It is a part of their biologically based attention dysfunction, and is beyond their easy control.

3. Explore the Option of Medication

For many children and adolescents, medication can be helpful in dealing with attentional difficulties. Medication can improve mental alertness and the intensity and duration of concentration. In addition, it may diminish impulsivity and hyperactivity. The student and his parents may wish to explore this option with his physician.

4. Allow for Movement and Breaks

It is helpful for students who have problems with inconsistent alertness and mental effort to be provided with opportunities to move around. For example, at school, teachers could ask the student to erase the board, collect papers or take a message to the office. At home, parents and/or the student could schedule regular breaks and change work sites. That is, the student could work several minutes at the kitchen table and several minutes on the living room floor. Each time the location is changed, the student may experience a burst of mental energy. Additionally, students may need to be doing something with their hands while seated. They may doodle, roll a piece of clay or perform some other manual tasks that enhance their alertness and arousal.

5. Vary Instructional Strategies

Teachers should use a variety of instructional strategies and these should be changed approximately every 15 to 20 minutes. For example, they could deliver information for 15 minutes via lecture. This strategy could be followed by small group work or cooperative learning for 20 minutes. Next, students could engage in individual seatwork or watch a video.

6. Use Signals

The teacher and parents should have a private way of signaling students when they are tuned out. For example, a gentle tap on the shoulder may be effective. Also, the student’s teachers and parents may need to signal him when something important is about to be stated. Looking right at him, his teacher or parent could say, “Now listen very carefully. I am about to give you important instructions about tomorrow’s test.”

7. Leverage Interests

Attention is enhanced when interest is heightened. Thus, students should be encouraged to read, write and talk about subjects in which they are interested. Additionally, students’ attention is enhanced when information is personally relevant to them. For example, if students need to learn a chronological timetable, the teacher could begin with having the students develop a chronological timetable of the important events in their own lives.

8. Minimize Noise & Other Distractions

Students who are easily distracted should benefit from a structured auditory environment. They may need preferential seating near the front of the classroom so that noise and distractions from other students are minimized.

9. Develop Previewing and Planning Skills

Teachers and parents can help students develop previewing and planning skills by requiring them to formulate plans for writing reports and completing projects. For example, when completing a book report, the students could submit plans for how they are going to accomplish this task. They will likely need specific instruction, followed by modeling, then guided practice, and finally feedback on performance. The concept of previewing should be explained to the students and they should be aware of the fact that the activities they are engaging in will help them develop previewing/ planning skills. It is helpful if they are first given practical examples of planning, such as planning for a party.

10. Use Behavior Modification and Self-Assessment

The use of behavior modification and self-assessment strategies can be helpful in increasing desired behaviors (e.g., task completion) and/or decreasing behavior problems (e.g., impulsive blurting out during class). The specific behaviors that need to be changed should be identified (e.g., completes reading classwork; raises hand before answering questions; brushes teeth before going to bed; puts dirty clothes in laundry). The specific consequences for behavior change should also be identified. The consequence for positive behaviors must be more rewarding to the student than failure to complete the positive behavior. For example, if the child is allowed to stay up an extra 15 minutes in the evenings, this behavior must be more rewarding than leaving his/her dirty clothes on the bathroom floor. Additionally, performance of the targeted behavior must be the only way that the student is able to obtain the reward. In the previous example, the child is only able to stay up the extra 15 minutes at night if he puts his dirty laundry in the designated place. School-home notes can be used to communicate back and forth between home and school. In both settings, charts and graphs can be used to monitor progress toward the goal. Students should be encouraged to assess their own behavior in addition to being assessed by the adult. They could be given an additional reward for accurate self-assessment.

11. Discourage Frenetic Work Patterns

To help students refrain from rushing through their work, teachers and parents could avoid making statements such as, “You can go out to recess as soon as you finish your assignment” or “You can watch television when you finish your homework.” Offers such as these may inadvertently encourage students to work too quickly and carelessly.

12. Get Organized

A notebook with three sections labeled “Work to be Completed,” “Work Completed” and “Work to be Saved” may be used to help students organize their assignments. Color-coding notebooks for different subjects may also be helpful for organizing work.

13. Use Daily Planners

A student should use a structured daily planner to help him organize his assignments and activities. A planner that is broken down by subject within the day and has sufficient room to write all the information he needs would be preferred. ELAN Publishing offers a number of good student organizers. Alternately, he may benefit from using a personal digital assistant (PDA).

14. Set Up a Home Office

At home, parents should guide their child/adolescent with setting up his/her own well-organized “office.” Parents should schedule a weekly time that their child/adolescent will dedicate to straightening up the office and making sure all office supplies are well-stocked (e.g., post-its, pencils, pens, highlighters, paper, paper clips, stapler). The student should find his/her best time(s) for studying (his/her most alert times of day), and post these times as his/her “Office Hours.” The student should also experiment with different kinds of background noise levels that work best for him/her when doing homework of studying. Some children/adolescents actually concentrate better in a noisy environment or while listening to music while others may need to use ear plugs.

15. Allow Time to Wind Down

Many students with attention problems have trouble falling asleep at night. It is helpful for them to have an established routine for going to bed at night. For example, they could read a book or have a book read to them. They can engage in stretching exercises before getting in bed. They could drink a glass of milk or hot chocolate prior to going to bed. They might also listen to quiet, easy music while falling asleep. “White noise,” such as a fan, may also be helpful in facilitating sleep.

As the number of students is increasing each year, more requirements of educational institutions are also more rigorous. They have to make sure that their graduates can represent the qualified ones. Some writing assignments are also frequently given as ways to make students be trained to transfer the idea, being creative to share important topic and being wide open to see knowledge from many perspectives. However, some students fall behind just because they don’t know what to write, how to start, how to correlate paragraph and how to conclude.

Writing ability is related much with reading activity. If students never read, they don’t seem to have good ability to write. When they read, they will get some input to be stored in their brain. Once they want to write, the learning devices of the brain will recall some input to be compiled and managed with other information. No wonder if some students will feel stuck in the middle of nowhere because they don’t even know the concept of writing. If you are one of those students, it is better for you to see custom assignment writing. It is like a shortcut to put you in condition of learning from previous writing samples. The simplest way to make you ready to start writing is imitating other writing examples, in terms of how to choose a topic; whether it is too general or too limited, of how to make topic statement to be explained throughout the whole paragraphs, of how to organize main ideas between paragraphs, and so on. Now, it is available custom assignment writing via internet that you can learn. However, if you still cannot gets the idea after viewing on them for some times, while you are timed by deadline and you are given many writing assignments from each different subject; don’t let yourself overloaded with it. You may have the writing service for essay and term paper, includes book review service over there.

Custom assignment writing service is provided with professional writers. They specialize in many kinds of different field of study. They have capability to gather data and competency to write them for you. They are also familiar with many types of curricula, teaching approaches and general requirements of writing assignments and custom coursework. They offer excellent quality to satisfy you. No plagiarism is a promise to keep. Besides, students who take the service don’t seem to learn to work individually. Therefore the service will show some peculiarities on the result so that students can anticipate further assignment related with it, such as presentation before audience.

Destiny and Free Will – the hidden secrets

Working as a psychic medium and healer I meet many people from all walks of life- from pop stars and pa’s, princes and paupers, the wise and the not so wise.

As well as the usual “what’s going to happen” advise, I specialize in reading, guiding and teaching people who are undergoing the most major traumas – people who feel like they’ve wandered off their life path. From losing a loved one or a soul mate, to people who just think their life is somehow cursed with bad luck from years of trying to push forward and repeatedly meeting opposition, lack or opportunity or suffering at the hands of others.

In these extreme cases destiny’s fingerprints are usually to be found everywhere and “WHY” is always the question.

In order to understand why the individuals have to experience such life traumas we need to look at the big picture; their destiny, life purpose and Karma. The secret is that the universe has purpose – rules and challenges. Nobody is here by accident; we are all here to live out our life’s purpose, to learn from experience and to walk the path.

No life is pointless, it’s all about progression, learning and succession to a higher level – something that even transcends one physical lifetime because our soul returns to continue the progression. This is our KARMA, the grand plan for our lives – the credits and debits, the good and the bad – the path we must tread. When we can instinctively ‘tune in’ to that karma, we find the purpose and the reasons for our lessons and can finally find our true path, to understand what’s happening and why – and to walk the path in peace and happiness. In other words we can free ourselves.

It never fails to amuze me when people call up and ask when they will meet their soulmate; but of course he or she has to be no older than 27, tall, rich and good looking. And of course if they could me them before the holidays that would be great.

These are the same people who will most likely call me again in a few years in misery, married to the wrong person and unable to move on because of commitments. Another type of reading are the ones who expect the universe to deliver everything at their door and take care of everything without making any effort. The “I know he’s not good for me but I’ll stay until something happens or I meet someone else”

But we and destiny both have a part to play in order to move along the path. She will present the opportunities and challenges but we must continue to walk the path. The secret is understanding how WHAT WE WANT and what’s MEANT TO BE sometimes coincide, and frequently contradict. Sounds simple but as always, in the simplest of things is to be found the greatest wisdom.

Consider our destined path as a route through a maze. The maze represents all of the possible challenges and rewards, all of the ups and downs, and all the people who we will meet who are destined to come into our lives to bring happiness or conflict. Within that framework of the maze we have free will. At any point we can turn left or right, go straight ahead or go back.

As humans we frequently have the illusion that life is totally free will. After all we can choose what to wear, where to go, who to marry and what color we want our décor. But ( didn’t you just know there was a but ! ) in some things we ultimately don’t. Our ‘free will’ and our destiny are ultimately intertwined by the fact of our existence within the predefined framework of the karma – the maze – the framework of the path from birth to death and ultimately rebirth.

What I mean is that if we are meant to pass a certain point, a certain key destined event, then we will. We can temporarily attempt to avoid these events and make a sharp left turn because we have our free will – but we will just eventually again arrive at the same junction having gone around in a big circle but having learned something very valuable on the way – a karmic lesson.

Fear, doubt, needing to control and other people’s influence can all make us take these choices in our lives but ultimately we can not avoid destiny, and that’s why the maze is such a good analogy.

This is why with these karmic events psychics often tell you that we cannot predict time with any great accuracy – especially where it involves another person learning a karmic lesson . . Having said that many will offer you 97% accuracy and a whole lot of other promises but realize that it’s only the timing that is in the domain of the free will of the person, the outcome is pre destined. Let’s just make this clear, it’s not the better the psychic the better they can read time, it just doesn’t work that way so beware..

Yes of course most psychics will see that new job opportunity arriving within the month and most will be right on that timing because its not a lesson, not your free will and not dependant on another person fulfilling karma.- it’s a pre destined gift from the universe that was always meant to occur at that time and therefore it can be easily seen within a time frame. In other words it’s an approaching junction in your maze.

But will you take the job…and when..that’s the free will element….

The universe really doesn’t care what you wear or what color you choose to dye your hair, however in these key life lessons we are talking here, where our free will and what we’ve learned is driving which route we take, timing is in the hands of the individual What is destined is the ultimate outcome.

Take for example soul mates, a classic “when will s/he return” question. Well the answer is when they have circled within their own maze long enough to realize that resistance is futile and that they have to come in your direction. How long will that take ? – well that’s something they have a choice of. It’s their karmic lesson…… What can be easily seen is that they will come your way, they have to. And it’s that nagging undoubtable voice within you that knows that.

Your guides are telling you all the time that this is something that HAS to happen and its unavoidable. People say to me “oh well my lesson is patience” – no. It’s FAITH. Understand that things that have to happen will happen. Don’t be a slave to the timing, you have your own path to walk and many other things that need to be encountered on the way. Ultimately free will cannot overcome destiny it can only delay things but each person needs to learn their lesson before they can move forward. And they will – the universe has much more control than we realize.
What will be will be……….

The ultimate goal is to transcend our fears and doubts, to relinquish control, to be open to opportunity and to be prepared to follow the path to wherever it leads.

Frequently we as humans ‘want’ our path to be a straight line from where we are now to what we want and set off in that straight line assuming it’s going to work. Understand that it may well be that there are twists and turns, unexpected events, challenges and also unexpected rewards.

Use those instincts, intuition, senses and emotions. We all have them and through them we are guided in the right direction…Psychics will help you because we are gifted to see so much more and can point the way and tell you what’s meant to happen.

If you make a decision based upon your best instincts and it felt right but it all went wrong then realize that although its been a challenge and a lesson, its just something you had to go through to get to an even better place and without having transcended that challenge, that experience, you couldn’t get to where you are going. Somewhere much better !

Wanting and deciding are mental functions that can create an alternate mental reality that what we decide to do is what really IS. That’s not the case, it can and will just keep us going around in circles.

Information is coming to you from your instincts and senses all the time and it isn’t wrong……..Listen to those instincts – be prepared to take what life deals with faith and hope. Be brave, walk the path and above all, as I say to everyone….

DON’T THINK – SENSE ! You wont be led in the wrong direction

By following these twelve tips, you will be guaranteed to get straight AAAAA’s. Read each tip carefully.

1. Find a quiet area in your house in which you are comfortable and can isolate yourself from distractions. Be sure that this space includes a chair, table or desk, and sufficient lighting. Ask others not to disturb you while you are in this special location and turn off all phones, beepers, televisions, videos, music, or anything else that your mind will wander to instead of focusing on the schoolwork.

2. Find the best time to study. Some students tend to do their best work as soon as they get home from school while they are still in the school mode. Others need a break and don’t settle down to study until after practice, playtime, a nap, dinner and/or family time. Just be sure to allow yourself enough time to get everything done and still get enough sleep each night.

3. Organize your day, week, month, etc. Set aside a specific time each day to do your homework and study. Decide on a reasonable minimum amount of time that you will spend in this quiet place each day. For instance, lets say you decide on 45 minutes as a reasonable amount of time to dedicate to schoolwork each day. This means that even if homework is completed in the first 35 minutes that you will still stay in this area and study or review notes for the next 10 minutes until the 45 is up.

4. Reward yourself for sticking to your schedule and being productive. Decide on an activity to do once your study time is completed. Plan on watching a television show later in the evening. Tell yourself that you will play five minutes of a video game for every fifteen minutes that you study. Create goals and their rewards before you start studying and work hard to reach them each and every day.

5. Variety is important. Vary the topics that you are spending time studying. Get the mandatory homework out of the way first and then go back and spend the additional time reviewing material from different courses each day. If you spent extra time reviewing history yesterday, spend the additional time on science tonight. Some subject areas may require more time than others. You should get a feel for this a month or so into the school year.

6. Study the difficult subjects first and get them out of the way. You will be able to absorb material quicker and make more connections when you are mentally fresh.

7. Take regular study breaks. This can also serve as a mini-reward. For instance, tell yourself that you are going to get a drink or snack or listen to a specific song after you finish re-copying your notes for science. Make the breaks short, 3-6 minutes or so, so you won’t get side-tracked or lose focus for the day.

8. Don’t just re-read notes or the text. Ask questions. Create flash-cards. Redo assignments. Create time-lines. Play games. Re-write your notes. Get someone to quiz you. Find websites online that review the same material. Make up questions that you think will be on the test. Create new outlines of the material by writing some specific topics and filling in the details from memory. Studying should be an active process, not just time spent re-reading something.

9. When you need to remember a group of terms use the first letter of each to create a word (acronym) or a sentence (acrostic). For instance, an easy way to remember the five Great Lakes is the word “HOMES”. By just remembering the word “homes” you can easily remember the names of the five Great Lakes . H stands for Huron, O for Ontario , M for Michigan , and so on. You can also create silly sentences to help you remember long lists of terms. For instance, remembering the sentence “Martha Visits Every Monday, Just Stays Until Noon, Period”, will help you remember the planets in the order they are found. M for Mercury, V for visits, E for Earth, etc.

10. Become a teacher. Find someone who is willing to listen to you –, a classmate (this would be a great review for them), Mom or Dad, a sibling, the family dog – and explain your notes to them. Have them (except the dog) ask questions about the material that they themselves don’t understand. It’s amazing how much you can retain when you have to actually teach material to someone.

11. Repetition, repetition, repetition. The material should become second nature to you by the time test day arrives. If it is not, then you need to devote more time to preparing for the test.

12. Exercise often and before you sit down to study. Research shows that students retain more after being physically active. Go to soccer practice, take a jog, rough-house with your dog, break a sweat first, then settle down and focus on your school work.

Throughout the history of human civilization, people have been expressing their confidence and strength, not only by force, but also by the noble art of public speaking.

The orators of ancient Greece were highly respected and valued in the community. Likewise, today’s world leaders are admired and esteemed when they have the power to address the public with poise and conviction.

Such a high regard for public speaking makes the average person cringe at the idea of talking in front of an audience no matter how big or small the size.

Whether giving a toast at a wedding or delivering a speech to a large assembly, most people make a big deal about public speaking and try to avoid it as much as possible. But public speaking should not cause such a big fuss. Challenging as it may be, public speaking can be done with a few simple guidelines.

Before Making The Speech: Preparation

Like any other endeavor, public speaking requires careful preparation to be successful. Many people would dream of having those “inspired” spontaneous speeches seen in movies; however, such scenes rarely happen in real life.

To have at least a decent speech, one should plan well. Even the world’s most famous leaders prepare for public addresses, and most even have teams to work on those plans.

Well, even if one does not have a speech preparation committee one can prepare for public speaking. First, one should know for what the occasion the speech is for. The Gettysburg address would definitely not be appropriate for a wedding; thus, a speech has to fit the event where it will be delivered to.

Second, one should examine the audience who will witness the speech. An assembly of academics would not take a perky speaker seriously; one should choose a suitable public speaking style based on the audience.

Third, one should ponder what is being expected in the speech. A farmer’s association would usually not be interested on a speech about the intricacies of beadwork; one should carefully study the subject matter to be tackled in public speaking.

Making The Speech: Writing

Again, dazzling spontaneous speeches rarely happen in real life. Most good speeches have been written before their delivery. While most noted public figures have speech-writing committees, one can make a good speech even without the help of a team of ghostwriters.

When writing for public speaking, one should carefully organize the contents of the speech. It usually pays well to begin with a very strong introduction. It is important to catch the audience’s attention early to prevent them from being bored easily. Next, the body should be purposeful.

The contents of the speech should relate well and support each other. It is not good to digress too much; though at times some deviations help attract attention when boredom arises. Lastly, one should make a conclusion that sticks to the mind. No matter how stirring a speech is, it is useless if the people forget it the instant they leave the gathering. Conclusions should give a concise but memorable recap of the body.

The Actual Public Speaking: Delivery

A written speech would not be consummated without the actual public speaking itself. This is the part most people are afraid of; but when proper planning and writing is done well, the delivery should follow easily.

One must decide whether to speak from memory or to use notes. Beginners should benefit from a script or a guide, when one becomes more comfortable speaking in public, one can start relying from memory.

Reading directly from a script can be quite boring for the audience; thus, it is important to keep constant contact with them. Speaking from memory is quite impressive, but it can be difficult to avoid missing some parts of the speech. Speaking with notes can be a good compromise so long as one is able to expound on the points well. The choice of how to deliver the speech depends entirely on the speaker; thus, it is important for one to weigh the options carefully.

Learning More About Public Speaking

Several resources could help one do well in public speaking. Several books and articles about the topic have been published and they can well be accessed through the library or the bookstore.

Many companies offer public speaking training, and such services provide in-depth courses that could help one speak well in public. There are also several articles and courses available through the Internet, some of them are even posted for free.

So, you dream of writing an interesting, rewarding, and valuable research paper and receiving a high estimate of you work from you professor? Then it’s vital that you start with brainstorming interesting research paper ideas and finding a good research paper topic for your work.

Sorry to disappoint you, but searching everywhere for good research paper topics round the clock will not be a way out! All attempts to find good ideas for research papers in the Internet, libraries, and manuals will be in vain, for they are filled with battered, run-of-the-mill research paper topics, or the ones that are impossible to investigate.

However, it is possible to derive a good research paper topic from whatever you do during a day. Keep on reading, and you will find out how to find a good research paper topic to your liking with ample information on its account.

Let us track your everyday activities and see whether there are some ideas for research papers you can come up with.

Suppose, it is Monday, 8 a.m. After your alarm clock wakes you up with a start and takes you back into the harsh reality, you switch on the radio hoping that the voice of a radio DJ will lift your spirits and tune you for good doings of the day. This very voice says that in 5 seconds you will be offered a daily astrological forecast. Whether skeptically or whole-heartedly, you learn what will happen to you today.

Wait a minute: skeptically or whole-heartedly? Bingo! It is high time for you to decide on your opinion of astrology in terms of a research paper topic in Science, which could sound like Is Astrology a Pseudoscience?

You’ve got your first research paper idea of the day!

Now you are rushing to the university and it strikes you that the majority of buildings you are passing by are office blocks with costly equipment that needs to be protected by built-in security gadgets. What are Built-In Security Features in New Constructions? How Do They Work? – could be the heading of good research paper topic in Architecture.

You’re at the university, a cradle of everyday stress that drives you mad. Why not take at least one advantage of the stress and turn this nagging daily problem into a good research paper topic? You could think of the causes of stress and investigate the problem on the scientific level.
Moreover, you could give a hint to your teachers on how to alleviate tension in the classroom in your research paper. They will appreciate your efforts and estimate your research paper at its true value.

As a rule, after classes you visit a local cafeteria with your friends. Bet your favorite is McDonald’s, where you can chat and have a bite at a time. Is that bite harmful? Or Are Fast Foods Synonymous with Junk Food? It can be a splendid research paper topic that would be based on your own experience, feelings of other consumers, and numerous poll results, since the country is full of fast food chains, the biggest of which is your beloved McDonald’s.

By the way, how McDonald’s chain spread all over the world? Try to find out and write a research paper on The McDonald’s Hamburger Success Story. It would be a nice investigation for a business research paper.

Surely, once a day you go to a local shop to buy food, where the cashier asks you politely whether you will pay in cash or with a credit card. How things change! Several years ago nobody could even think of all these electronic devices, but now we can’t live without credit cards. Why? What Factors are Contributing to the Expended Use of Credit Cards? What Might Influence Their Decline?

After shopping you fill the refrigerator with the products humming your favourite song, but a weird thought stops you: How did our ancestors manage with food preservation when there were no fridges? There must have been some alternative to frost! That’s a really nice boon.

In the evening, you sit down in a comfortable chair and watch TV, the most favorite activity that takes approximately 170 minutes from 24 hours, according to a U.S. consumer survey. Did you pay attention to that? Do it now. This burning problem needs immediate research. Do investigate television as the phenomenon of the modern world; try to find out what it gives and how it influences our consciousness.

From the first seconds of watching TV, you are most likely to catch a glimpse of annoying ads, so as they take 15 minutes out of a typical TV hour. And you think: Oh, Gosh! Not again! Television is not an Entertainment Medium, it is an Advertising Medium. And you get another good research paper topic in Sociology that will be likely to respond to everyone’s feelings about ads.

Before bedtime you want to have a bath, but your younger brother/sister turns up. You fail in the marathon to the bathroom and end up extremely mad beside the closed door. But instead of grumbling, you could thank your sibling for making one more research paper topic come into your mind: Do First-Born Children Differ from Those Who are Born Later? What are the Possible Reasons and the Significant Characteristics for These Variations?

Now you can forget about your bath session and peacefully go to bed, since the mission of the day is complete: you have got an abundance of research paper topic ideas.

As you can see, it wasn’t difficult. It is possible to find good research paper topics without putting too much effort into the search. As Seneca once put it, the best ideas are common property, you only need to stretch your hand and take them. So, be sure to recognize good research paper topics among the ones flying in the air. Wish you good luck!

For many people, homeschooling may call to mind the picture of two or three children sitting at a table and writing feverishly in their workbooks, while mom or dad stands nearby. This is the not entirely true. There are different methods of homeschooling, and the method you choose will decide the curriculum and your style of teaching. Given below are some of the most influential and popular homeschooling methods.

The Charlotte Mason method:

Charlotte Mason is known as the founder of the homeschooling movement. A homeschooler herself, she was passionate in her zeal to lay out the foundations for an effective a complete homeschooling program that is fun and educational at the same time. This method focuses on all the core subjects with emphasis placed on classical literature, poetry, fine arts, classical music and craft. Mason used a variety of books from classical literature, which she called ‘Living Books’. Since this method encourages a passionate awareness of literature, the child is read to daily from the ‘Living Books’. After this, the child is asked to narrate what she has heard. This process begins at the age of six, and by ten the child is expected to write her narrations in her book. Mason also advocated the use of ‘Nature Diaries’. After each short and interesting lesson, the child is asked to go to Nature and draw observations from Nature. Thus the child also gains a sense of respect for her environment. Mason believed that development of good character and behavior was essential to the complete development of the child’s personality.

The Eclectic Homeschooling:

This is a mixture of various homeschooling techniques. Here, the innovative parents trust their own judgment and pick out the topics that make the best curriculum for their child. Such parents continuously look out for the best products that will meet the needs of their homeschoolers. Most Eclectic homeschooling curriculums are improvised. This means that the basic curriculum sready-made. The parents then make changes in the curriculum to accommodate the individual needs and interests of their children. The child’s gifts, temperament, learning style and interests dictate the curriculum. Eclectic programs include visits to the museum, libraries and factories.

Unschooling:

A Boston public educator name John Holt laid the beginnings of the unschooling method. He believed that children learned best when they are free to learn at their own pace and when they are guided by their own interests. His message was to ‘unschool’ the child. This method is a hands-on approach to learning, where the parent takes definite cues from the children. There is no definite curriculum, schedules or materials. This method is the most unstructured of the various homeschooling techniques.

The Montessori Method:

This method began in Italy, when it was observed that children have acute sensitive periods, during which they undergo periods of intense concentration. During such phases, a child will repeat an activity till he gains a measure of self-satisfaction. The Montessori method depends on a prepared environment to facilitate learning. All the materials used in this method are designed to satisfy the inner desire for spiritual development of the child. The materials used progress from simple to complex, and are rather expensive.

These are just a few of the methods of homeschooling. Whatever the method, the underlying factor is flexibility and a keen interest in the desires of the child. The secret is to use the child’s desire for knowledge to further his education.

The following strategies are offered to help students develop a more efficient and effective memory. This listing is by no means exhaustive, but rather is meant as a place to begin.

1. Take the mystery away.

The first and perhaps most important strategy is to insure that all students understand how memory works and identify their particular profiles of memory strengths and challenges. Then, students should be taught memory management strategies.

2. Give directions in multiple formats.

Students benefit from being given directions in both visual and verbal formats. In addition, their understanding and memorizing of instructions could be checked by encouraging them to repeat the directions given and explain the meaning of these directions. Examples of what needs to be done are also often helpful for enhancing memory of directions.

3. Teach students to over-learn material.

Students should be taught the necessity of “over-learning” new information. Often they practice only until they are able to perform one error-free repetition of the material. However, several error-free repetitions are needed to solidify the information.

4. Teach students to use visual images and other memory strategies.

Another memory strategy that makes use of a cue is one called word substitution. The substitute word system can be used for information that is hard to visualize, for example, for the word occipital. These words can be converted into words that sound familiar that can be visualized. The word occipital can be converted to exhibit hall (because it sounds like exhibit hall). The student can then make a visual image of walking into an art museum and seeing a big painting of a brain with big bulging eyes (occipital is the region of the brain that controls vision). With this system, the vocabulary word the student is trying to remember actually becomes the cue for the visual image that then cues the definition of the word.

5. Give teacher-prepared handouts prior to class lectures.

Class lectures and series of oral directions should be reinforced by teacher-prepared handouts. The handouts for class lectures could consist of a brief outline or a partially completed graphic organizer that the student would complete during the lecture. Having this information both enables students to identify the salient information that is given during the lectures and to correctly organize the information in their notes. Both of these activities enhance memory of the information as well. The use of Post-Its to jot information down on is helpful for remembering directions.

6. Teach students to be active readers.

To enhance short-term memory registration and/or working memory when reading, students should underline, highlight, or jot key words down in the margin when reading chapters. They can then go back and read what is underlined, highlighted, or written in the margins. To consolidate this information in long-term memory, they can make outlines or use graphic organizers. Research has shown that the use of graphic organizers increases academic achievement for all students.

7. Write down steps in math problems.

Students who have a weakness in working memory should not rely on mental computations when solving math problems. For example, if they are performing long division problems, they should write down every step including carrying numbers. When solving word problems, they should always have a scratch piece of paper handy and write down the steps in their calculations. This will help prevent them from loosing their place and forgetting what they are doing.

8. Provide retrieval practice for students.

Research has shown that long-term memory is enhanced when students engage in retrieval practice. Taking a test is a retrieval practice, i.e., the act of recalling information that has been studied from long-term memory. Thus, it can be very helpful for students to take practice tests. When teachers are reviewing information prior to tests and exams, they could ask the students questions or have the students make up questions for everyone to answer rather than just retelling students the to-be-learned information. Also, if students are required or encouraged to make up their own tests and take them, it will give their parents and/or teachers information about whether they know the most important information or are instead focused on details that are less important.

9. Help students develop cues when storing information.

According to the memory research, information is easier retrieved when it is stored using a cue and that cue should be present at the time the information is being retrieved. For example, the acronym HOMES can be used to represent the names of the Great Lakes – Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior. The acronym is a cue that is used when the information is being learned, and recalling the cue when taking a test will help the student recall the information.

10. Prime the memory prior to teaching and learning activities.

Cues that prepare students for the task to be presented are helpful. This is often referred to as priming the memory. For instance, when a reading comprehension task is given, students will get an idea of what is expected by discussing the vocabulary and the overall topic beforehand. This will allow them to focus on the salient information and engage in more effective depth of processing. Advance organizers also serve this purpose. For older students, CliffNotes or other similar study guides for pieces of literature are often helpful aids for priming the memory.

11. Use Post-Its.

The use of Post-Its for jotting down information can be helpful for students who have short-term memory or working memory challenges.

12. Activate prior knowledge.

In order to enhance the likelihood that students will elaborate on new incoming information, teachers should activate their prior knowledge and make the new information meaningful to them. An easy way of accomplishing this task is to ask, “What do you know”, “What do you want to know”.

13. Give extended time.

If students have difficulty with the speed of retrieving information from memory, they should be given extended time for taking tests so that a true picture of what they know may be gained.

14. Use multisensory methods.

When learners, both young and old, experience something through multiple senses, they are much more likely to remember it. Use a Multisensory approach by engaging as many of the senses as possible when teaching (seeing, touching, hearing, smelling, and tasting).

15. Review material before going to sleep.

It should be helpful for students to review material right before going to sleep at night. Research has shown that information studied this way is better remembered. Any other task that is performed after reviewing and prior to sleeping (such as getting a snack, brushing teeth, listening to music) interferes with consolidation of information in memory.
